Cold, Wet Weather & Grapevines

The weather in the northeast this summer has been very wet and temperatures have been below average. This blend of wet and cool damages leaves and grape clusters during the critical fruit-cluster pollination and development period.

The New York grape growers have calculated hundreds of grapevines lost or damaged due to the heavy rains and no sun.

No doubt this damage will affect the yields of the grapevines that have "weathered" the cool temps and rains. Our hope is that the winemakers will be able to produce a good vintage in spite of the lost vines and cooler temps. It's also possible that prices may be a bit higher for this vintage as a result of the low yields.

Our best to the grape growers and winemakers for a successful harvest this year.

Salute!
Bring on the "Big" Ones In This Cooler Weather

With the cooler temperatures we've had in the northeast this summer, it would be nice to enjoy wines with a little more body.

Let's go to Piedmont in northern Italy where the cooler climate and soil produces wines with balanced acidity that are just right for many of the foods we enjoy during the summer months.

Piedmont is home to some of the best white wines one being Gavi, and also Dolcetto which is a red that sometimes gets little respect.

Dolcetto, in Italian means little sweet one, though this wine is not sweet. It is a dry, fruity and zesty wine that has bright fruit, and is crisp and clean. The delicate fruit flavors make this a perfect summer wine with hors d'ouvres and salads, and the acidity cuts through the rich flavors of grilled meats and barbecue.

Gavi is the premier white wine from Piedmont. It has fruit flavors of apples and mimosas and is fresh and crisp with balanced acidity that make it perfect with shelfish, fish, grilled white meats and chicken.

These wines have the stuff that makes wine pairing easy, so don't hesitate to choose these two wines for your summer get togethers. They may be "big" though not very bold, and are very affordable at under $15.

Salute!
